STUDIO FOR THE PROMOTION OF ARTS, CULTURE AND EXCELLENCE
S.P.A.C.E. An Artistic Community, Inc.

HISTORY OF THE ORGANIZATION

ABOUT...S.P.A.C.E. An Artistic Community, Inc.
The Studio for the Promotion of Arts, Culture and Excellence S. P. A. C. E. An Artistic Community, Inc., is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit tax-exempt cultural and educational organization. S.P.A.C.E. was designed to support and encourage inner-city artists and to give them a venue to pursue their artistic talents. With the lack of contemporary art in the community and my personal knowledge of so many area artists having gone through art schools in Boston peaked my interest and I wondered, "Where are they? What were they doing with their Art?"
This inspired my vision of S.P.A.C.E., (formerly Visuals, Perceptions, Etc.) an organization that would actively seek out artists whose talents were being wasted. Thus, S.P.A.C.E. was born...

This vision became a reality in November 1995 and was incorporated in 1996.

The organization has served as a medium for artists and poets bringing their artistic talents to the public thus, empowering them to have confidence in their ability to move forward into the world of ART!
At one time, S.P.A.C.E. could boast seventy (70) artist until the bulk of them became recognized and saw their potential to rise to their calling. This is what the organization envisioned.
S.P.A.C.E. An Artistic Community, Inc., was organized exclusively for the charitable or educational purposes within the meaning of Section 501 (c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code; to foster understanding of contemporary art and culture; to support and encourage artists of the Boston metropolitan area at crucial points in their careers and to increase the presence of contemporary art in the community; to provide a haven for artists to work and collaborate with their peers and to create a supportive environment where artists can work with their peers or by themselves.

S.P.A.C.E. avision of the founder, Survilla M. Smith, is based on her beliefs that inner-city artists lacked not only space to create and pursue their dreams, but also a ready vehicle to promote their works. By providing a venue for them to exhibit and sell their works S.P.A.C.E. has provided the following opportunities:
